Importance of Legionella Testing in Water Systems

By Richard Scott at 2014-07-25 00:07:36
The outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease gained much media attention due to large number of people became ill or even died. According to the stats presented by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 8000 to 18000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease each year in United States alone. Legionnaires’ disease is a serious public health concern since fatality rate ranges from 5% to 30% percent among people who contract the decease. Just like any other disaster, preventing the outbreak by proactively managing the risk of Legionella bacteria in cooling towers and water systems is more cost effective compared to responding to outbreak retroactively. A regular legionella testing in water systems should be conducted from time to time.

Drinking Water Testing for Early Detection of Outbreak

Periodic drinking water testing and testing of other water system will ensure:

• Effective control measure is already in place
• Detection of early warning of any potential problem

Legionellosis is a bacterial disease that is commonly observed among people above the age of 50 and is extremely rare in those under the age of 20. Many people rely on untreated water source such as bores, streams, springs for their daily water requirements such as drinking, washing, cooking needs. 22 percent of current drinking water is contaminated either by faecal matter or are of unknown quality. This situation makes drinking water testing a must requirement in an effort to check Legionnaires' disease and calls for action to set a protocol for regular legionella testing in water systems including cooling tower water, recycled warm water system and swimming pools.
